We all know that tea is rich in vitamins and amino acids, which plays a role in enhancing immunity, dispelling greasiness after a heavy meal and is refreshing. However, is there such thing as drinking too much tea? And how do we determine how much tea can we drink in a day?

Well, the amount of tea consumed daily depends on several factors.

According to Professor Tu Youying from the Department of Tea Science of Zhejiang University, the amount of tea recommended for consumption by a grown adult is usually 5 to 15g of tea per day*, while the total water consumption for brewing these teas can be controlled at about 400 to 1500ml.

Therefore, if we take an average adult as an example, here's a simple calculation. Since the recommended amount is 5 to 15g, we can divide it according to the number of times we drink tea in a day. Let's say we drink tea three times a day, that would be about 5g of tea per brew. Each cup of tea would be 250ml of water and hence a total of 750ml of tea per day.

Tea is rich in vitamins, polyphenols and other substances, and brewing allows these to be extracted into water for better absorption. However, we must be mindful not to replace water with tea or use it as a substitute. As tea also contains diuretic components, it is essential that we also consume the required daily water intake for our body to prevent dehydration.
