Product Introduction

The production is in full compliance with the original 7542 tea cake processing procedure. The raw materials are harvested from semi-arbor type of broad-leaf varietal tea trees on the mid-slopes at an altitude between 1400m & 1800m at the famous ancient tea tree mountains of Nanluo and Bulang in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. Mid-slope teas refer to tea leaves harvested from the area between the plain and the mountain, especially the upper-middle stretch of the mountain right below the peak. Short, shrub type of tea trees characteristic of leveled land has evolved into the semi-arbor variety as a result of higher altitude and changing climatic conditions of the sloping terrain.


In 1975, tea merchants in Hong Kong placed an order of qizi tea cakes (green cakes, or qing bing) with China National Native Produce & Animal by Products Import & Export Corporation Yunnan Tea Branch. The tea was to be non-astringent, refreshingly smooth and aromatic. Tea cake should have just the right degree of compression should the tea cake be too compact, it would not be conducive to natural ageing; should it be too loosely compressed, it would easily fall apart. After repeated trials, the tea manufacturers came up with a blend made of grades 1-7 sun dried broad-leaves from Xishuangbanna, Yunnan according to a specific proportion of bud tip (white buds on the surface of the tea cake), top (top layer of the tea cake), core (middle layer of the tea cake), and the base (bottom layer of the tea cake). These compressed Yunnan qizi tea cakes (green cakes/qing bing) were exported to Hong Kong under the reference number 7542. As it contained raw teas of various grades, the tea cake showcased the characteristics of different tea leaves, yielding a smooth infusion with very appealing taste to the consumers. The mellow, smooth and clean infusion of early 7542 (now commonly known as 88 Green/Qing in the market) has won over consumers and the tea fraternity alike. 57% of the raw tea has reached the qualified grade 4 specification, hence the export number "7542" ("75" indicates its launch year 1975, "4" indicates the major grade characteristics of the raw tea leaves, and "2" indicates the number of its place of origin, Menghai tea factory).
